Consulting & innovation · Fine crafts

The craft is ancient. Your methods don’t have to be.

Animated 3D drawings: seen from above, a path runs into the dead ends of a maze; the view tilts and the path clears a wall; then a bridge is built diagonally above the walls, from entrance to exit, and the path crosses it in a straight line.

Aporie Lab helps small and mid-sized fine craft businesses grow. From brand strategy to complex project management, we invent solutions to your business challenges, together.

Why “Aporie”

aporia

[əˈpɔr.i.ə] n.

  1. From the Greek aporia, “without passage.” A difficulty with no visible way out.
  2. Philosophy. An unresolvable contradiction in reasoning.

Aporetic thinking

In Plato, Socrates’ dialogues often end in aporia: each speaker discovers that what they thought they knew doesn’t hold up. That isn’t failure; it’s where inquiry begins. Aristotle turned it into a method: to find the way through, you first have to work through the difficulty from every side. Thinking aporetically means staying with a contradiction long enough to understand it, instead of going around it. That’s where new solutions are born.

Sooner or later, every workshop meets its own.

Growth that chokes production. Know-how that’s no longer passed on. A brand no one understands outside of trade shows.

We start from these dead ends. We name them, take them apart, then build the way through with you, reworking each piece as if it were on the workbench.

Our team passes on methods we first put to the test ourselves.

Also available

3D design

See a piece before you make it, and connect the hand to the machine.

  • Renderings to present a project
  • Prototypes and 3D printing
  • Production-ready files

Method

Four steps to set your creativity free.

  1. Name An on-site assessment, in the workshop. We watch production before we talk strategy.
  2. Take apart We break down the chain: materials, techniques, time, margins, customers. The dead end becomes a list of concrete problems.
  3. Prototype We test solutions on a small scale: a process, a tool, an offer, a piece modeled in 3D.
  4. Pass on We document and train your teams until you no longer need us.

Contraindications

  • Forcing a startup playbook onto a workshop.
  • Delivering an 80-page report that ends up in a drawer.
  • Replacing the hand with the machine.
  • Innovating for innovation’s sake.

Everything else is up for discussion.
